Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors and remembers the military personnel who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday is observed on the last Monday in May each year.
The origins of Memorial Day can be traced back to the aftermath of the American Civil War. In 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans’ organization, declared May 30th as Decoration Day, a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. The first national observance of Decoration Day was held at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Union and Confederate soldiers were buried.
Over time, Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day, and its focus expanded beyond honoring Civil War veterans to include all American military personnel who had died in service. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday and established its observance on the last Monday in May, in order to create a long weekend for federal employees.
Today, Memorial Day is observed with solemn ceremonies, parades, and the decoration of graves with flowers and flags. It is a time for Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who died in service to their country and to honor their memory.
